Composite fillings and dental bonding use the same basic material: a tooth-colored resin that bonds directly to your tooth. For a cavity, we remove the decayed part of the tooth and fill the space with resin. For bonding, we add resin to the outside of a tooth to repair a chip, close a small gap or rebuild a worn edge. In both cases, the resin is shaped, hardened with a special light and polished to blend in.

Because composite bonds to the tooth, we can often remove less healthy tooth structure than older filling methods required. That matters, because natural tooth structure helps keep the tooth strong over time. Treating a cavity while it is still small also helps prevent the decay from reaching the nerve, which could lead to a root canal or a crown later on.

At our Hialeah office, Dr. Jonathan Guzman and Dr. Jovanny Guzman take time to match the shade and shape of each repair to your smile. We will show you what we see, explain whether a filling, bonding or another option makes the most sense, and answer your questions before any work begins. If you are worried about cost or comfort, we are happy to talk that through first.

Is this right for you?

  • Your dentist found a small or medium cavity
  • A tooth has a small chip or rough edge
  • You have a small gap between front teeth
  • Your teeth have worn edges from grinding
  • An old silver filling is cracked or leaking
  • A tooth feels sensitive to sweets or cold
What to expect

How it works, step by step.

1

Exam and plan

We check the tooth, take X-rays if needed and explain your options so you know what to expect.

2

Prepare the tooth

After numbing the area if needed, we gently remove any decay and clean the surface so the resin can bond well.

3

Shape and harden

Tooth-colored resin is placed in thin layers, shaped to fit your tooth and hardened with a curing light.

4

Polish and check bite

We polish the repair to a natural shine and adjust it so your bite feels comfortable and even.

Your comfort

Many people worry that a filling will hurt. For most fillings, we numb the area first, so you typically feel pressure or vibration but not sharp pain. Small bonding repairs on the surface of a tooth often do not need numbing at all. If you feel anxious, let us know. We will explain your numbing and comfort options at your consultation, and you can raise your hand to pause at any time.

Healing & aftercare

If you were numbed, your lip and cheek may feel numb for a few hours, so wait to eat until feeling returns. Some mild sensitivity to cold or biting pressure is common for a few days and usually fades on its own. Brush and floss daily, avoid chewing ice or pens, and ask about a night guard if you grind your teeth.

Cost, insurance & financing

The cost of a filling or bonding depends on the size and location of the repair, how many surfaces of the tooth are involved and how many teeth need care. Dental insurance often covers part of fillings for cavities, while purely cosmetic bonding may not be covered. We accept CareCredit and can discuss financing options. We give you the cost before we start, so you can decide with confidence.

FAQ

Common questions

Composite fillings often last many years. How long yours lasts depends on its size, where it is in your mouth, your bite and your home care. Grinding, chewing hard objects and new decay around the edges can shorten its life. Regular checkups let us spot wear early and repair it before it becomes a bigger problem.

Both use tooth-colored composite resin. A filling repairs a hole left after removing decay, so it is mostly inside the tooth. Bonding adds resin to the outside of a tooth to fix chips, gaps, worn edges or uneven shapes. Bonding is often done for looks, while fillings are done to treat a cavity and protect the tooth.

Not always. If an older silver filling is intact and the tooth is healthy, there is often no need to replace it. We typically suggest replacing one when it is cracked, leaking, has decay around it or the tooth near it has broken. Some patients also choose to replace them for appearance. We will look at each one and give you an honest opinion.

Composite resin is hardened with a light before you leave, so the filling itself is ready right away. If you were numbed, wait until the feeling comes back before eating so you do not bite your cheek, lip or tongue. Start with softer foods if the tooth feels a little tender.

Composite resin can pick up stains over time from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco, more than natural enamel or porcelain does. Rinsing after dark drinks and keeping up with regular cleanings helps. Bonding does not change color with whitening, so if you plan to whiten your teeth, we usually suggest whitening first and match the bonding afterward.
