Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the very back of your mouth. They usually come in between the late teens and mid-twenties. Some people have enough room for them to grow in straight and stay healthy. For many others, the teeth come in at an angle, only partly break through the gum or stay trapped in the jawbone. These are called impacted wisdom teeth

Problem wisdom teeth can be hard to clean, which raises the risk of cavities, gum infection and swelling. They can also push against the tooth in front of them or, less often, form a cyst in the bone. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out, but one that is causing trouble usually won't fix itself. Early evaluation gives you more choices and time to plan.

At Progressive Dental Office in Hialeah, Dr. Jonathan Guzman and Dr. Jovanny Guzman remove wisdom teeth right in our office. We start with an exam and X-rays to see how each tooth is positioned, then explain what we recommend and why. If simply watching a tooth is a reasonable choice, we'll tell you that too. We'll also explain what recovery looks like before you decide.

Is this right for you?

  • Pain or pressure at the back of your jaw
  • Swollen, tender or bleeding gums behind your last molars
  • A bad taste or smell near the back teeth
  • Food getting trapped around a partly erupted tooth
  • Trouble opening your mouth fully
  • Crowding or damage to the teeth next to them
What to expect

How it works, step by step.

1

Exam and X-rays

We check the position of each wisdom tooth, its roots and nearby nerves, and talk about your symptoms and health history.

2

Your treatment plan

We explain whether removal is recommended, which teeth are involved and your comfort options, and answer your questions.

3

Removal visit

After the area is fully numbed, each tooth is carefully removed. Some teeth are taken out in sections so less bone needs to be removed.

4

Healing and follow-up

You go home with gauze and written aftercare instructions, and we'll check on your healing if needed.

Your comfort

Feeling nervous about wisdom teeth removal is very common. Before we begin, the area is fully numbed, so most patients feel pressure and movement rather than sharp pain. Soreness and swelling for a few days afterward are normal and often peak around day two or three. We'll explain your numbing and comfort options at your consultation and go over a plan for managing discomfort at home.

Healing & aftercare

Most people feel much better within three to five days, though full healing takes a few weeks. For the first day, bite on gauze, rest and use ice on your cheek. Avoid straws, smoking and spitting hard, since these can disturb the blood clot and lead to a painful dry socket. Eat soft foods, keep your mouth clean as directed and call us if pain gets worse instead of better.

Cost, insurance & financing

The cost of wisdom tooth removal depends on how many teeth are removed, whether they are impacted in bone or gum, how complex the roots are and which comfort options you choose. Dental insurance often covers part of the cost when removal is needed. We accept CareCredit and can discuss financing. We give you the cost before we start, so you know what to expect.

FAQ

Common questions

No. If your wisdom teeth are fully erupted, healthy, easy to clean and not crowding other teeth, they may be fine to keep with regular checkups. Removal is usually recommended when they cause pain, infection, decay, gum problems or damage to nearby teeth.

Removal is often easier in the late teens or early twenties, when the roots are not fully formed and the bone is softer. Healing also tends to be quicker. That said, adults of any age can have wisdom teeth removed when there's a reason to. We'll review your X-rays and advise you.

The procedure itself often takes under an hour, depending on how many teeth are removed and how they are positioned. A simple, fully erupted tooth may take only a few minutes. Plan to rest for the rest of the day after your visit.

Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the empty socket comes loose or dissolves too early, exposing bone. It causes throbbing pain a few days after removal. To lower your risk, avoid straws, smoking and strong rinsing for the first few days, and follow your aftercare instructions. Call us if you think you have it.

For the first few days, stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies eaten with a spoon and soup that isn't too hot. Most people slowly return to their usual diet over about a week. Avoid crunchy, spicy or seedy foods until the area has healed.
