Relieve tooth pain and save your natural tooth

Root canal therapy removes inflamed or infected tissue from inside a tooth so it can heal. For most patients, it eases pain and lets them keep the tooth.

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which holds nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach the pulp, causing inflammation or infection. Root canal therapy cleans out that damaged tissue, disinfects the inside of the tooth, and fills and seals the space. The outside of the tooth stays in place, so you keep your natural root.

Without treatment, an infected tooth does not heal on its own. The infection can spread to the bone around the root, form an abscess and cause swelling. In many cases, the main alternative is removing the tooth. Saving it helps keep your bite, chewing and nearby teeth in place, and it often avoids the need for an implant or bridge later.

At our Hialeah office, Dr. Jonathan Guzman and Dr. Jovanny Guzman start by finding the true source of your pain. We explain what we see on your X-rays, whether a root canal makes sense for you and what other options you have. Many root-canal-treated teeth need a crown afterward, and we will plan that with you from the very first visit.

Could you need a root canal?

  • A toothache that throbs or keeps you up at night
  • Pain when you bite down or chew
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near a tooth
  • A pimple-like bump on the gums
  • A tooth that has darkened in color
What to expect

How it works, step by step.

1

Diagnosis

We examine the tooth, take X-rays and run simple tests to find the source of the problem.

2

Numbing and access

We numb the area well, place a small shield to keep the tooth clean and make a small opening in the top.

3

Clean and seal

We remove the inflamed or infected pulp, clean and shape the canals, then fill and seal them.

4

Restore the tooth

A filling closes the opening. Many teeth, especially back teeth, then get a crown for added strength.

Your comfort

Root canals have a scary reputation, but most patients say the procedure feels much like getting a filling. The pain people remember is usually from the infection before treatment, not the treatment itself. We numb the tooth thoroughly and check that you are comfortable before we begin. If you feel anxious, tell us. We will explain your numbing and comfort options at your consultation, and you can ask us to pause at any time.

Healing & aftercare

It is normal for the tooth to feel tender for a few days, especially when biting. Over-the-counter pain relievers often help; ask us what is right for you. Avoid chewing hard foods on that side until the tooth has its final filling or crown. With a proper restoration and good home care, a root-canal-treated tooth can often last for many years. Call us if you notice swelling or pain that gets worse.

Cost, insurance & financing

The cost of root canal therapy depends on which tooth is treated, since back teeth have more canals, how complex the case is and whether you need a crown afterward. Many dental insurance plans cover part of root canal treatment. We accept CareCredit and can talk about financing options. We give you the cost before we start, so you can make the choice that is right for you.

FAQ

Common questions

Most patients say a root canal feels similar to getting a filling. The tooth is numbed before we begin, so you typically feel pressure but not sharp pain. The strong pain that leads people to the dentist usually comes from the infection itself, and treatment is meant to relieve it. Some tenderness for a few days afterward is common.

Many root canals are done in one visit of about one to two hours, depending on the tooth. Front teeth usually have one canal, while molars can have three or more, so they take longer. Some cases, such as a tooth with a large infection, may need two visits. We will tell you what to expect for your tooth.

Often, yes, especially for back teeth. A tooth that needs a root canal has usually lost structure from decay, cracks or old fillings, and it can become more brittle over time. A crown covers and protects it so it is less likely to break. Some front teeth with little damage can be restored with a filling instead.

Saving your natural tooth is usually the first choice when it can be done predictably. Removing a tooth can lead to shifting teeth and bone loss, and replacing it with an implant or bridge adds more time and cost. In some cases, a tooth is too damaged to save. We will explain both options honestly so you can decide.

Most people return to work or school the same day or the next day. Your lip and cheek may stay numb for a few hours, so wait until the numbness wears off to eat. You may feel some soreness, which usually improves over a few days.
