A dental cleaning and exam is the foundation of good oral health. During your visit, we remove plaque and hardened tartar that brushing and flossing at home can miss. Then one of our dentists checks your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of your mouth. The goal is simple: find small issues, like an early cavity or gum irritation, while they are still easy to treat.

Many dental problems do not hurt at first. Gum disease, worn fillings and small cracks can grow quietly for months. Regular visits give us a chance to spot changes over time and talk with you before something becomes painful or more involved to fix. For most patients, that means less time in the chair and fewer surprises down the road.

At our Hialeah office, we treat families of all ages, from kids getting comfortable with the dentist to grandparents caring for crowns and bridges. Dr. Jonathan Guzman and Dr. Jovanny Guzman take time to explain what they see in plain language, in English or Spanish. You will leave knowing where your smile stands and what, if anything, to do next.

Is it time for a visit?

  • It has been more than six months since your last cleaning
  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss
  • You notice bad breath that does not go away
  • A tooth feels sensitive to hot, cold or sweets
  • You see tartar buildup or stains near the gumline
  • You are new to the area and need a family dentist
What to expect

How it works, step by step.

1

Health review

We go over your medical history, medications and any concerns you have about your teeth or gums.

2

Exam and X-rays

The dentist checks your teeth, gums, bite and mouth tissues. X-rays are taken when needed to see between and below teeth.

3

Professional cleaning

We remove plaque and tartar, then polish your teeth so they feel smooth and fresh.

4

Your care plan

We explain what we found, answer your questions and suggest next steps, if any, along with when to come back.

Your comfort

If you feel nervous about the dentist, you are not alone. Most cleanings are comfortable, though you may feel some pressure or mild sensitivity, especially if it has been a while. Tell us how you feel at any time and we can slow down, take breaks or adjust how we work. If your gums are tender, we will explain your numbing and comfort options before we continue. You are always in control of the pace.

Healing & aftercare

There is no downtime after a routine cleaning. You can eat, drink and go back to work or school right away. Your gums may feel a little tender for a day if there was more buildup than usual. To keep results going, brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily and limit sugary drinks. Most patients come back every six months, though some people with gum concerns may need visits more often.

Cost, insurance & financing

The cost of a cleaning and exam depends on the type of cleaning you need, whether X-rays are due and your dental insurance plan. Many insurance plans cover routine cleanings and exams at a high level, often twice a year. If you do not have insurance, we can talk through your options, and we accept CareCredit financing. Either way, we give you the cost before we start, so there are no surprises.

FAQ

Common questions

Most people do well with a cleaning and exam every six months. Some patients, such as those with gum disease, diabetes or a history of frequent cavities, may benefit from visits every three or four months. Your dentist will recommend a schedule based on your mouth and health history, and that schedule can change over time.

A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar above and slightly below the gumline on healthy gums. A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, reaches further below the gums to clean pockets caused by gum disease. Your dentist will only recommend a deep cleaning if your exam and measurements show it is needed, and will explain why.

No. X-rays are taken based on your needs, age and risk of dental problems. Many adults need a set of bitewing X-rays about once a year, and a fuller set every few years. If you have recent X-rays from another office, we can often request them so you do not need to repeat them.

Yes. Routine cleanings and exams are considered safe and important during pregnancy, since hormone changes can make gums more likely to swell and bleed. Let us know you are pregnant so we can plan your visit, and we typically postpone non-urgent X-rays and elective treatment until after the baby is born.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry suggests a first visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth coming in. Early visits are short and gentle. They help your child get used to the dental office and give you tips on brushing, teething and healthy snacks.
