Replace missing teeth

Replace a missing tooth with a strong, natural-looking implant

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth and supports a custom crown, without relying on your neighboring teeth for support.

A dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium, that is placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Over a few months, the bone typically bonds to the implant and holds it firmly in place. A connector piece called an abutment is then attached, and a custom tooth-colored crown goes on top. The result looks and works much like a natural tooth, and you brush and floss it the same way.

When a tooth is lost, the bone in that spot can slowly shrink, and nearby teeth may start to drift or tilt. That can change your bite and make chewing harder. An implant replaces the root as well as the visible tooth, which helps support the bone. Unlike a traditional bridge, an implant does not require filing down the healthy teeth next to the gap.

At Progressive Dental Office in Hialeah, Dr. Jonathan Guzman and Dr. Jovanny Guzman handle implant care with a focus on planning and safety. We review your health history, check your bone and gums and explain every step before anything begins. If you need extra support first, such as a bone graft, we will explain why and how it fits into your timeline.

Is a dental implant right for you?

  • You are missing one tooth, or a tooth needs to be removed
  • You do not want to file down healthy teeth for a bridge
  • A gap makes chewing or smiling uncomfortable
  • Nearby teeth are starting to shift into the space
  • You want a fixed tooth that does not come out
  • Your overall health allows for minor oral surgery
What to expect

How it works, step by step.

1

Exam and planning

We review your health, take X-rays and check your bone and gums to plan the implant position.

2

Implant placement

The implant post is placed in the jaw during a minor surgical visit with local anesthetic.

3

Healing period

Over a few months, the bone typically bonds to the implant. A temporary tooth may be an option meanwhile.

4

Final crown

We attach the abutment and your custom crown, then check your bite and fit.

Your comfort

Many people worry implant surgery will hurt a lot. In practice, most patients say it was easier than they expected. The area is numbed before we begin, and you should feel pressure rather than sharp pain. Some soreness and swelling for a few days afterward is normal. We will explain your numbing and comfort options at your consultation and give you clear aftercare instructions.

Healing & aftercare

Most people return to normal activities within a day or two after placement. For the first days, eat soft foods, avoid chewing on the area and keep it clean as directed. Full healing of the bone around the implant typically takes a few months. Once your crown is in place, good brushing, flossing and regular checkups help your implant last for many years. Smoking can slow healing and raise the risk of problems.

Cost, insurance & financing

The cost of a dental implant depends on things like whether a tooth needs to be removed, whether bone grafting is needed and the type of crown used. Some dental plans cover part of implant treatment, and others cover related steps like extractions. We accept CareCredit and can discuss financing options. We always give you the cost before we start, so you can make a clear decision.

FAQ

Common questions

With good care, many implants last for many years, and some last a lifetime. The crown on top may need to be replaced at some point due to normal wear. Brushing, flossing, regular cleanings and avoiding smoking all help protect your implant and the gums and bone around it.

Many healthy adults with a missing tooth can get an implant. You need enough bone to support the post, or a bone graft to build it up. Conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking can affect healing. During your exam, we review your health and explain whether an implant is a safe choice for you.

From start to finish, most single-tooth implants take a few months. Much of that time is healing while the bone bonds to the implant. If you need an extraction or bone graft first, the timeline may be longer. We will give you an estimated schedule during your consultation.

Usually not, if you prefer not to. In many cases a temporary tooth, such as a removable flipper or a clear retainer with a tooth, can fill the space while you heal. For some front teeth, other temporary options may be possible. We will talk about what fits your situation.

Each has pros and cons. An implant does not require filing down neighboring teeth and helps support the jawbone. A bridge can be finished faster and may cost less up front. The right choice depends on your health, bone, budget and goals. We will explain both options honestly so you can decide.
