Rebuild a strong foundation for your new smile
When a tooth is lost, the jawbone around it can shrink. Bone grafting and sinus lifts help rebuild that bone so implants have solid support.
Your jawbone needs the roots of your teeth to stay strong. After a tooth is pulled or lost, the bone in that spot often starts to shrink. This can happen slowly over months or years. Bone grafting adds bone-building material to the weak area. Over time, your body grows new bone in and around the graft. A sinus lift is a special kind of graft for the upper back jaw, where the sinus sits just above the tooth roots.
Why does this matter? A dental implant is like a new root, and it needs enough healthy bone around it to stay stable for the long term. Without enough bone, an implant may not be an option, or it may not last as well. Grafting can also help keep the shape of your face and gums after an extraction, so your smile looks more natural and future teeth fit better.
At Progressive Dental Office in Hialeah, Dr. Jonathan Guzman and Dr. Jovanny Guzman start with a careful exam and X-rays to see how much bone you have. Not everyone needs a graft. If you do, we explain why, what kind of graft makes sense, and how it fits into your full plan. We want you to understand every step before anything begins.
Is bone grafting right for you?
- You want a dental implant but were told you do not have enough bone
- A tooth was pulled months or years ago and the area has sunken in
- You need a back upper tooth replaced and the sinus sits close to the jaw
- You are having a tooth removed and want to save the space for an implant later
- Gum disease has caused bone loss around your teeth
- Your denture has become loose because the ridge has shrunk
How it works, step by step.
Exam and imaging
We check your mouth and take X-rays to measure the bone in the area. Then we talk through your goals and options.
Your custom plan
We explain the type of graft you need, how long healing usually takes, and the cost before we start.
Graft placement
After the area is numb, the graft material is placed and covered so it can heal. For a sinus lift, the sinus floor is gently raised to make room for new bone.
Healing and next steps
Over the next few months, new bone typically forms. Once it is ready, we can move forward with your implant.
Your comfort
It is normal to feel nervous about a procedure on your jaw. The area is fully numbed before we begin, so most patients feel pressure but not sharp pain. We'll explain your numbing and comfort options at your consultation, and you can ask us to pause at any time. Afterward, most people have some swelling and soreness for a few days, which is often managed with cold packs and the medicine we recommend.
Healing & aftercare
Most patients go back to normal daily activities within a day or two. For the first week, eat soft foods, chew on the other side, and avoid smoking and drinking through a straw. After a sinus lift, try not to blow your nose hard or sneeze with your mouth closed. Bone typically takes several months to mature. We will see you for check-ups to make sure the area is healing well before your implant.
Cost, insurance & financing
The cost of bone grafting depends on the size of the area, the type of graft material, and whether a sinus lift is needed. Some dental insurance plans cover part of grafting, especially when it is linked to an extraction, so we are happy to check your benefits. We accept CareCredit and can talk about financing options. We always give you the cost before we start, so there are no surprises.

Common questions
Not always. Many people have enough bone for an implant. A graft is usually needed when bone has shrunk after a tooth was lost, or when the bone is too thin or short to hold an implant safely. We check this with an exam and X-rays and will tell you clearly whether a graft is needed in your case.
A sinus lift is a bone graft for the upper back jaw. The sinuses sit above the roots of your upper back teeth. When those teeth are lost, the bone can thin out and the sinus can drop lower. A sinus lift gently raises the sinus floor and adds graft material underneath, creating enough bone height to place an implant.
The area is numbed before we begin, so most patients feel pressure but not sharp pain during the procedure. Afterward, it is common to have some swelling, soreness or mild bruising for a few days. Most people manage this well with cold packs, rest and the pain medicine we recommend. We'll go over your comfort options at your consultation.
Healing time depends on the size and type of graft. For many grafts, new bone typically forms over about three to six months, and sometimes longer for larger areas or sinus lifts. In some cases, a small graft can be placed at the same time as the implant. We will give you a timeline based on your own situation.
Graft material can come from several sources. It may be processed donor bone, animal-derived bone, synthetic material, or bone from your own body. Each type is carefully prepared and has been used in dentistry for many years. We will explain which option fits your needs and why, and answer any questions you have before treatment.
