We always try to save a natural tooth when we reasonably can. Sometimes, though, a tooth is too damaged, infected or loose to repair. A surgical extraction is used when a tooth is broken at the gum line, has curved or long roots, or hasn't fully come in. It may involve a small opening in the gum or removing the tooth in sections.

Leaving a badly damaged or infected tooth in place can lead to ongoing pain, swelling and infection that spreads. Removing it protects your health and the teeth around it. Just as important is planning for the space it leaves behind, since gaps can cause nearby teeth to shift and the jawbone to shrink over time. That way, you know what comes next.

At Progressive Dental Office in Hialeah, Dr. Jonathan Guzman and Dr. Jovanny Guzman explain why a tooth needs to come out and walk you through every step. When it makes sense, we can talk about preserving the bone at the time of extraction and replacing the tooth later with an implant, bridge or denture. You'll always know the plan before we begin.

Is this right for you?

  • A tooth that is broken, cracked below the gum or badly decayed
  • Severe infection that can't be treated with a root canal
  • A loose tooth caused by advanced gum disease
  • A broken-off root or tooth that's hard to reach
  • Impacted teeth, such as wisdom teeth
  • Crowding that needs space before orthodontic treatment
What to expect

How it works, step by step.

1

Exam and X-rays

We look at the tooth, its roots and the surrounding bone, and explain whether it can be saved and what removal involves.

2

Numbing and comfort

The area is fully numbed before we begin, and we check that you're comfortable throughout.

3

Careful removal

The tooth is gently loosened and removed, sometimes in sections, to protect the bone and nearby teeth. Stitches are placed if needed.

4

Healing and next steps

You get clear aftercare instructions, and we'll talk about options to replace the tooth once you've healed.

Your comfort

It's normal to feel anxious about having a tooth pulled. Before we start, the area is fully numbed, so most patients feel pressure rather than sharp pain. We'll tell you what to expect as we go, and you can raise your hand anytime to take a break. Some soreness afterward is common and usually improves within a few days. We'll explain your numbing and comfort options at your consultation.

Healing & aftercare

Most people feel better within a few days, and the gum typically closes over the next couple of weeks. Bite on gauze for the first hour, rest, and use ice to reduce swelling. Avoid straws, smoking and hard rinsing for a few days to protect the blood clot. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. If you plan to replace the tooth, we'll schedule the next step once the area has healed.

Cost, insurance & financing

The cost of an extraction depends on whether it's a simple or surgical removal, the tooth's position and roots, whether a bone graft is placed to preserve the site and the comfort options you choose. Dental insurance often covers part of an extraction. We accept CareCredit and can go over financing with you. We give you the cost before we start, including any tooth replacement you're considering.

FAQ

Common questions

The area is fully numbed first, so most patients feel pressure but not sharp pain during the extraction. Soreness afterward is normal and is usually managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. If pain gets worse after a few days instead of better, call us so we can check for problems like dry socket.

A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully visible and can be loosened and lifted out. A surgical extraction is used for teeth that are broken, impacted or have complex roots, and may involve a small opening in the gum or removing the tooth in pieces.

In most cases, yes, especially for teeth you use for chewing or that show when you smile. A gap can let nearby teeth tip or drift and allow the jawbone to shrink. Options include a dental implant, a bridge or a partial denture. We'll help you weigh the pros and cons.

If you have a painful, broken or infected tooth, call our Hialeah office as soon as possible during business hours. We'll try to see you as soon as we can. If you have swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest emergency room.

Most people feel back to normal within a few days. The gum usually closes in about one to two weeks, while the bone underneath keeps healing for a few months. Surgical extractions and back teeth may take a little longer. Following your aftercare instructions supports healthy healing.
