A dental crown is a custom cap that covers the entire visible part of a tooth. It protects a tooth that is cracked, badly worn, heavily filled or treated with a root canal. A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. It is made of a false tooth held in place by crowns on the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. Both are designed to match the color and shape of your natural teeth.

A weak tooth that is left unprotected can crack or break, sometimes past the point of repair. A gap from a missing tooth can let nearby teeth tip or drift, change your bite and make chewing harder. Crowns and bridges help restore strength, function and appearance, and they are fixed in place, so you do not take them out at night.

At our Hialeah office, Dr. Jonathan Guzman and Dr. Jovanny Guzman walk you through every option for your tooth or gap, including when a filling, an implant or another approach might fit better. We explain the pros and cons of each in plain language, so you can choose the option that feels right for your health, your goals and your budget.

Is this right for you?

  • A tooth is cracked, chipped or badly worn
  • A large old filling is breaking down
  • You recently had a root canal on a back tooth
  • You are missing one or a few teeth in a row
  • A tooth is badly discolored or misshapen
  • An old crown or bridge is loose, chipped or worn
What to expect

How it works, step by step.

1

Exam and planning

We check the tooth and gums, take X-rays and talk through your options and goals.

2

Prepare the teeth

After numbing the area, we gently reshape the tooth or teeth so the crown or bridge can fit, then take impressions or scans.

3

Temporary protection

You leave with a temporary crown or bridge while your custom restoration is made by a dental lab.

4

Final fit

We check the color, fit and bite, make any adjustments, then bond or cement your final restoration in place.

Your comfort

Getting a crown or bridge is usually similar to getting a filling. We numb the area before preparing the teeth, so most patients feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. The visit can be longer than a filling, so we build in breaks and check on you along the way. If you feel nervous, let us know. We will explain your numbing and comfort options at your consultation, and you can pause at any time.

Healing & aftercare

Your teeth and gums may feel a little sore or sensitive for a few days after each visit. With a temporary crown, avoid sticky or very hard foods and slide floss out to the side rather than pulling up. Care for your final crown or bridge like natural teeth, and clean under a bridge with a floss threader. With good care and regular checkups, crowns and bridges often last many years.

Cost, insurance & financing

The cost of a crown or bridge depends on how many teeth are involved, the material used, and whether you need other care first, such as a filling, a root canal or gum treatment. Many dental insurance plans cover part of crowns and bridges when they are needed for your health. We accept CareCredit and can discuss financing options. We give you the cost before we start, so you can plan with confidence.

FAQ

Common questions

Crowns often last many years with good care. How long yours lasts depends on the material, where it is in your mouth, whether you grind your teeth and how well you care for it. Decay can still form at the edge of a crown, so brushing, flossing and regular checkups remain important.

Both can work well. A bridge is often faster and does not need surgery, but it relies on reshaping the neighboring teeth. An implant replaces the root and stands on its own, leaving nearby teeth untouched, but it takes longer and needs healthy bone. The right choice depends on your teeth, bone, health and budget. We will explain both honestly.

Most crowns today are tooth-colored, made from porcelain or ceramic materials such as zirconia. Some are made from metal or porcelain fused to metal, which can work well for back teeth. We choose the material based on the tooth's location, how much force it takes when you chew and how you want it to look.

A crown typically takes two visits a couple of weeks apart. At the first visit, we prepare the tooth, take impressions or scans and place a temporary crown. At the second visit, we remove the temporary, check the fit and color of your custom crown, and then bond or cement it in place. A bridge follows the same general process.

Tooth-colored crowns are designed to match the shade, shape and size of your nearby teeth, so they usually blend in well. If you plan to whiten your teeth, it helps to do that first, since crowns do not change color with whitening.
