A frenum is a small fold of tissue that connects your lip or tongue to your gums or the floor of your mouth. Everyone has them. Sometimes a frenum is too short, too thick or attached too close to the teeth. This can limit tongue movement, pull on the gums, or leave a gap between the front teeth. A frenectomy gently releases or removes that tissue so the lip or tongue can move more freely.

Tori are harmless bony bumps that can grow on the roof of the mouth or on the inside of the lower jaw near the tongue. They are not cancer and often cause no problems. But large tori can get scraped while eating, collect food, make cleaning harder, or block a denture or partial from fitting well. Removing or smoothing them can make your mouth more comfortable and ready for new teeth.

At Progressive Dental Office in Hialeah, Dr. Jonathan Guzman and Dr. Jovanny Guzman will look closely at the area and explain whether treatment would truly help you. Many people never need these procedures, and we will tell you honestly if you do not. When they do, we keep the visit simple, explain each step, and make sure you know how to care for the area at home.

What to expect

How it works, step by step.

1

Exam and discussion

We check the tissue or bone, review your symptoms, and explain whether treatment is likely to help.

2

Clear plan

We go over what the procedure involves, how healing usually goes, and the cost before we start.

3

The procedure

After the area is numb, the tissue is released or the bony bump is gently removed and smoothed. Small stitches may be placed.

4

Healing check

We see you for a follow-up to make sure the area is healing well and answer any questions.

Your comfort

These are usually short procedures, but any surgery in the mouth can feel worrying. We numb the area fully before we begin, so most patients feel light pressure but not sharp pain. We'll explain your numbing and comfort options at your consultation. Afterward, the area may be tender for a few days. Most people do well with cold, soft foods and over-the-counter pain medicine we recommend.

Healing & aftercare

Most frenectomy patients feel back to normal within about a week. If a tongue tie was released, we may show you simple stretches to help keep the area from tightening. After tori removal, healing often takes one to two weeks, and soft foods help. Rinse gently as we direct and keep the area clean. If you are getting a denture, we will let you know when the area is ready.

Cost, insurance & financing

The cost depends on which procedure you need, how many areas are treated, and the size of the tori or tissue involved. Some dental or medical insurance plans may cover part of the treatment, especially when it is needed for a denture or to fix a functional problem. We accept CareCredit and can talk about financing options. We always give you the cost before we start.

Common questions

A frenectomy is a minor procedure that releases or removes a frenum, the small band of tissue that connects your lip or tongue to your gums or the floor of the mouth. When this band is too tight or attached in the wrong spot, it can limit movement or pull on the gums. Releasing it often helps the lip or tongue move more freely.

No. Tori are harmless growths of normal bone and are not cancer. Many people have them and never need treatment. They are usually removed only if they get irritated often, trap food, make cleaning hard, or get in the way of a denture or partial. If you notice any new or changing bump in your mouth, it is always a good idea to have it checked.

The area is fully numbed first, so most patients feel pressure but not sharp pain during the procedure. Afterward, it is normal to feel soreness for several days, especially when eating. Most people manage well with soft foods, cold drinks and the pain medicine we recommend. We'll go over your comfort options at your consultation.

Yes. Many adults live with a tongue tie for years without knowing it. It can cause trouble with certain sounds, tension when moving the tongue, or difficulty keeping teeth clean. A frenectomy can be done at any age. We will check how your tongue moves and talk about whether a release is likely to help you.

Sometimes. A denture or partial needs to sit flat and snug against your gums. Large tori on the roof of the mouth or inside the lower jaw can block a good fit or cause sore spots. If that is the case, we may suggest removing or smoothing them first. Smaller tori often do not need treatment.
